The latest Beyond the Barrelman exhibition opened on September 5th in Chicago. It includes 40 Filipino/Fil-Am artists. Our friend Roberto Jamora’s beautiful homage to Felix Gonzales-Torres (above) is featured in the exhibition.
The barrel man has also been identified as a part of Philippine culture and art, often as the subject of Filipino jokes. In 2005, an exhibit called “Beyond the Barrelman” debuted in Chicago. The event showcased modern Filipino art and implied an evolution of Filipino art from the crude, comical barrel man figurine. - wikipedia
Beyond the Barrelman: As we struggled in the beginning to come up with a name for this project, one of the recurring themes that arose was the challenge to overcome certain stereotypes — even within our own Filipino American community — about what constitutes contemporary Filipino art. Contrary to many people’s beliefs, our creativity and craftsmanship went beyond oversized carved wooden spoons, seashell vases and holiday parols — “beyond the Barrelman.”
